Four Avenues of Service - Overview

Rotary is "Leaders Taking Action".  The Object of Rotary is to “encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise.”  Rotary is a service organization.  Since 1910, the Rotary Motto has been “Service Above Self.”

Rotary strives to achieve it’s objective of “Service Above Self” through activities in four primary areas.  These are often referred to as the Four Avenues of Service.

Club Service

This “Avenue” promotes the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.  It involves the activities necessary to make the Club function successfully and achieve its goals.

Perhaps the most impressive and rewarding Club Service Project, Sandusky Rotary sponsors is one that also requires every Club Member to be a part of either on the fundraising side or in its deliver.  Called ... Rotary Clothes Kids, this annual Service Project gives 190 to 200 kids a year a shopping experience in November or December of each year.  The children in many cases have only enjoyed hand me downs.  This is a chance for each child with a Rotarian Shopper to

actually go shopping for clothes,  take the time to try the items on, and leave the store with many

needed and a few "just really wanted" clothing items.  Boots, coats, sweaters, school uniforms,

logo and themed shirts, pants and jeans, pajamas, underwear, and more.  If it is not the shopping

list provided by their parent(s), or caregiver, every attempt is made to find the items and let the

child pick out the color and style.  Few Sandusky Club Rotarians miss shopping on at least one

of the five consecutive Saturday Mornings each year.  RI even recognized the club with its

prestigious Significant Achievement Award in 2014 for Rotary Clothes Kids.

Vocational Service

This area represents the opportunity that each Rotarian has to represent the dignity and utility of one’s vocation as an opportunity to serve society.  Rotarians promote and foster high ethical standards in business and professions and promote the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations.

Sandusky Rotary is made up of a group of leaders in business, education, and with organizations who bring arts and needed services to the community.  At its weekly programs, there are many area vocations and learning opportunties presented.  Education and encouraging the youth to be prepared for the work place is the focus of a substantial number of Rotarians.  The Little Free Library at Facer Park is just one example of a commitment to education and it is stocked and monitered by Rotarians on a weekly basis.

Community Service

This “Avenue” relates to the activities that Rotarians undertake to improve the quality of life in their community.  Particular emphasis is given to helping children, needy families, the aged, the handicapped, and those most in need of assistance.  Rotarians strive to promote the ideal of service in their personal, business, and community lives.

In 2015, The Rotary Club of Sandusky joined with 15 other Rotary Clubs in District 6600 to purchase a new Refrigerated Truck for Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio.  This

Truck now delivers to partner Charities in Sandusky, Erie County, and two other Counties... needed Food and even Fresh Produce when available.  As a follow up and continuation of the

spirit of this gift which is delivering food to as many as 60,000 people in a year, many Rotarians

are volunteering for the Farmers Markets May through October which being Fresh Produce

directly from the Farms to families who seldom get a chance to enjoy Fresh Produce due

to their finances and housing situations.

International Service

In this area, Rotarians strive for the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.  International Service Projects are designed to meet the humanitarian needs of people in many lands, with particular emphasis on the most underprivileged children and families in developing countries.

As disasters have hit due to earthquake and typhoons, Sandusky Rotary Club has joined with

Rotarians around District 6600 and the world to purchase Sheltor Boxes for these unexpectedly

homeless families.  Each Sheltor Box is self contained and fully stocked with basic bedding

and utensils so families have sheltor while waiting for their towns and homes to be rebuilt.
